In the heart of Strathroy, a unique initiative is transforming the community’s landscape, figuratively and literally.

Proudly supported by Community Futures Middlesex, the Building Foundations Project is a collaborative endeavour spearheaded by the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH) Foundation, the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc, and Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School (CSS). This project is not just about constructing homes — it’s about building futures and nurturing communities.

At its core, the Building Foundations Project aims to address several critical government priorities, including the availability of attainable housing, fostering interest in skilled trades among youth, and enhancing the capacity of rural hospitals to serve their local communities.

This partnership brings an ambitious vision to life, seamlessly intertwining the expertise of the SMGH Foundation, the municipality’s commitment to community well-being, and the dedication of Holy Cross CSS to providing practical experience for their students.

The project, which broke ground in April 2023, has already seen the completion of the first two homes by February 2024, marking a significant milestone in its progress. These semi-detached homes, built on lots generously donated by the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc, stand as tangible symbols of opportunity for growth within the community.

Once completed, the proceeds from the sale of these homes will support the SMGH Foundation’s mission of enhancing healthcare services in Strathroy, specifically by purchasing diagnostic imaging equipment.

The success of the Building Foundations Project is not only measured in bricks and mortar but in the transformative impact it has on individuals and communities alike.

For the students of Holy Cross CSS, it’s an opportunity to discover their passions and carve out pathways to rewarding careers in the skilled trades. For the residents of Strathroy, it’s the creation of attainable housing and a promising future for young families. As for Community Futures Middlesex, it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and the fulfillment of our strategic goals in fostering community economic development.

Central to the project is the involvement of Grade 11 and 12 construction technology students from Holy Cross CSS. These students are active participants in every stage of construction, working alongside skilled tradespeople and the general contractor to bring the project to fruition. From laying the foundation to installing the final touches, these students are gaining valuable hands-on experience and honing their skills in a real-world setting.

As the project unfolds, the ripple effects of this partnership-driven initiative are felt far beyond the construction site. It creates a positive impact and demonstrates what we can achieve when communities come together with a shared vision and purpose.

Ultimately, the Building Foundations Project is not just about building homes — it’s about building stronger, more resilient communities.
